"The entire design team at Christian Dior, clad in white lab coats, walked onto the runway to receive applause after the show in Paris today — the first that would go on without dismissed designer John Galliano in fifteen years. The team received a standing ovation, and though this may not have been the label’s most impressive collection in terms of clothes, it may have been its most impressive collection in a few other ways."
And then the show was off, with Dior face Karlie Kloss opening in a "dramatic cape and knickerbockers." Some in attendance were wondering what was and what wasn't Galliano. Show Studio called the closing lingerie-inspired dresses "exquisite" and "quintessential Galliano." But both they and The Wall Street Journal's Christina Binkley noticed the collection was heavy on handbags — those things that actually make luxury brands money. "No strong point of view here," Binkley added. Meanwhile, the London Times called the front row "very sad," and the clothes "quite subdued," wondering, "where did the weird make up and monobrows go?"
The audience clapped "wildly" when the show concluded, and at least some fashion people seem to have left feeling uplifted, rather than mournful. Binkley tweets that Dior "deserves an award for crisis management," adding, "I honestly think Dior will come out of this better than before. Weirdly a coup for the brand. Very weirdly."
